Comparison of Galerkin-type discretization techniques for two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media

چکیده
A comparison of Standard Galerkin, Petrov–Galerkin, and Fully-Upwind Galerkin methods for the simulation of two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media is presented. On the basis of the coupled pressure–saturation equations, a generalized formulation for all three finite element methods is derived and analysed. For flow in homogeneous media, the Petrov–Galerkin method gives excellent results. But this method fails miserably for problems with heterogeneous media. This is because it is not able to capture correctly processes that take place at interfaces when, for instance, the capillary pressure–saturation relationship after Brooks and Corey is assumed. The Fully-Upwind Galerkin method is superior to the Petrov–Galerkin approach because it is able to give correct results for flow in homogeneous and heterogeneous media for the two models of van Genuchten and Brooks–Corey. The widely used dpc/dSw grad Sw formulation which is correct for the homogeneous case cannot be used for heterogeneous media. Instead the straightforward approach of grad pc in combination with a chord-slope technique must be utilized. q 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. All rights reserved

A Hybridized Crouziex-Raviart Nonconforming Finite Element and Discontinuous Galerkin Method for a Two-Phase Flow in the Porous Media
In this study, we present a numerical solution for the two-phase incompressible flow in the porous media under isothermal condition using a hybrid of the linear lower-order nonconforming finite element and the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. This hybridization is developed for the first time in the two-phase modeling and considered as the main novelty of this research. The p...

Comparison of DDFV and DG methods for flow in anisotropic heterogeneous porous media — We present a preliminary work to simulate gas injection in deep aquifers. Unsteady single-phase flows are considered. We compare Discrete Duality Finite Volume (DDFV) and Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes applied to discretize the diffusive term. The second-order Backward Differentiation Formula is used for...
متن کاملA hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media
We present a new method for simulating incompressible immiscible two-phase flow in porous media. The semi-implicit method decouples the wetting phase pressure and saturation equations. The equations are discretized using a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method. The proposed method is of high order, conserves global/local mass balance, and the number of globally coupled degrees of fre...

Deterioration of groundwater resources in coastal regions due to the progression of saline water in aquifers in these regions is currently one of the important issues in providing water needs in these areas. In coastal regions, saline water enters the aquifer from below in shape of wedge. Due to the difference in the density between fresh and salty water, an interface zone forms between two flu...

The mathematical model forenergy transport was based on single phase equation model which assumes local thermal equilibriumbetween fluid and solid phases. ...
